So far in this lesson, you’ve considered how chords are used in contemporary / pop rock ballad piano accompaniments. In this lesson, you’ll identify some of the other characteristics of the pop/rock ballad style. You’ll choose a pop / rock ballad from a list provided, listen to the piece and identify other features of the style.
Instructions:
- Choose a Ballad: Select one contemporary pop or rock ballad from the list provided below:
- Listen Carefully: Play the chosen ballad and listen to the role the piano plays in the piece. Consider the following things as you listen:
- Changing rhythmic Patterns: Listen for changes in the rhythmic figures or patterns in the accompaniment. What role do these have in the piece? Listen for patterns or motifs that repeat with subtle variations. How do these contribute to the overall structure and interest of the accompaniment?
- Pedalling: Observe how the sustain pedal is used.
- Melodic Fills and Embellishments: Listen for any additional melodic elements or decorative notes that fill in the space between chords or highlight pauses in the music. Can you work out what these are?
- Dynamic Variation: Pay attention to changes in dynamics throughout the piece. How does the volume and intensity shift, and how does this affect the emotional impact of the ballad?
- Octave Doubling: Notice if certain parts of accompaniment are doubled in octaves. What impact does this have on the music?
- Simple Bass Lines: Identify the role of the LH in the accompaniment. Is it simple and steady, providing a solid foundation, or does it have more complexity?
- Repetition with Variation: Listen for patterns or motifs that repeat with subtle variations. How does this repetition contribute to the overall structure and interest of the accompaniment?
- Take Notes: While listening, make notes on each of these features as they appear in the ballad.
- Reflect and Summarize: Write a brief summary on page 22 of your workbook. Highlight how these features contribute to the style and feel of the ballad, and note any particularly interesting aspects or techniques used.
Now that you’ve considered these elements, you can think about how you might integrate these other aspects of the pop/rock ballad accompaniment style into the accompaniments you put together.
