2c. Continue an accompaniment pattern in a given style

In this lesson, you’ll complete a series of exercises in your PDF workbook which get you to continue an accompaniment pattern in a given style using chords provided. This exercise will give you the opportunity to practice what you have learnt in the previous lessons in this course.

The style of the accompaniment will be given in the first bar of each exercise and the remaining bars will be empty, but with chord indications written above them. Your job will be to complete the missing bars in the style of the opening bar, using the chord indications to guide you.

  • Begin by examining the accompaniment pattern provided. Focus on these elements:
    • Voicing: How are the chord notes split between the right and left hands?
    • Rhythmic structure: How are the chord notes (e.g the root / 3rd / 5th) distributed rhythmically
    • Texture: Is the pattern arpeggiated, or are the notes played together in blocks
  • Next, apply the same accompaniment style to the remaining chords. Maintain consistency in rhythm, voicing, and texture while adapting to the changing harmonies.

Ready to go? Turn to page 20 of your PDF workbook and get started. When you have completed the exercises, show your teacher your work and then move on to the next lesson.
